5:00pm – A final word from Helen
The simple fact is that it costs a little over £1000 a year to be poor in the UK. This “poverty premium” is something that can and must be addressed. It can be addressed because, for the most part, it is not actually driven by financial poverty, it is a data poverty that causes the damage. People on low incomes don’t engage as often with mainstream credit, they don’t build credit history and so, in the eyes of the credit system, appear to be higher risk investments. Open Banking is perfectly positioned to address this by shifting our affordability model to one based a person’s capacity to pay and not on historic risk factors. If we can do that we can put an end to forced engagement with high-cost credit and to involuntary switches to pre-pay utility meters charging premium prices.
The speakers at this campfire are those doing exactly that – those people using Open Banking to deliver a fairer credit system based on transparency and responsible underwriting on both sides. Register now, this is not one to miss.
As Open Banking becomes more ingrained in our financial system it is starting to have a material impact on big, systemic problems. Our panel will take a look at a set of case studies where Open Banking is making a real difference and talk about what needs to happen to expand these pockets of best practice.
Gender diversity in Open Banking is a challenge. To find out more about what we’re doing to address it, check out the blog post on our “Pass The Mic Campaign” or better still, nominate an inspirational woman to speak at one of our 2023 campfires.
